These developed from traditional Scottish dancing . they were popular in the USA in the 1890’s when they were held to celebrate the building of barn on a farm. Barn dances are still held today in country areas.
Break dancing
Break dancing began in New York in the late 1970s and early 1980s. some of its movements came from martial arts such as kung fu and from gymnastics. It became a feature of hip-hop culture.
Belly dance
The popular name of a style of dance that originated in the Middle East, especially Egypt. It was originally danced only by women and men were not permitted to watch. An Essex woman named Eileen Foucher set a belly dance record. She danced for 106 hours, from 30 July to 3 August 1984.
The Charleston
The hip-swaying hula is danced by Polynesian islanders who settled in Hawaii. It was banned by Christian missionaries for a while ,but became popular again in the late 19thcentury. In 1958, a craze for hula hoops swept the world. Both adults and children swung plastic hoops round their hips to a hula dance movement.
The limbo
This competitive dance comes from Trinidad. Dancers lean back to pass under a bar, which is placed lower and lower. The winner is the dancer who passes under the lowest bar. On 2 march 1991 Dennis Walston, known as king Limbo (USA ) Limboed under a bar 15.25 cm

Flamenco dancing
Flamenco is popular in Andalusia, Spain, and comes from Moorish and gypsy dancing .It is lively and exciting ;the dancers usually ply castanets and are accompanied by guitars, clapping and drumming.
Lindy Hop
The lindy Hop was a version of the Charleston and another dance called the Breakaway. It started at the Savoy Ballroom, New York, and was named after US aviator Charles Lindbergh (nicknamed Lindy). In 1927 he became the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic.
The Conga
People dance the conga in a line, each dancer holding on to the person in front. The conga began in Latin American carnivals and spread to the USA in the 1930s. The Miami Super Conga line was held on 13 March 1988. The conga line was made up of 119,986 people- only 14 short of 120,000
Morris dancing
This is a traditional English folk dance. Dancers wear special costumes with bells, and hold sticks, handkerchiefs and swords.
The polka
The polka was originally a Czech peasant dance which developed in Bohemia in the 1830s. it became popular in Paris in the 1840s and eventually spread worldwide.
The twist
The twist started hank Ballard recorded the song of this name in 1959. It became popular when Chubby Checker. Performed his cover version on US television on 22 October 1961 .A woman called Ra Denny holds the twist record. She twisted for 100 hours at Christchurch, New Zealand, in March 1962
The waltz
The Waltz began in Austria in the late 18th century. Its name comes from a German word meaning to revolve. Manu people were shocked by the dance when it first came to England in 1812 because it involved men and women dancing close to each other.
